The Meningitis Trust Family Fun Day was one of many projects funded by the People’s Postcode Trust last quarter, and the impact of their grant could be seen immediately- hosting an event at Edinburgh Zoo for all the family, the day catered primarily for the needs of children affected by meningitis who are aged between 3–12. Importantly, it was also open to all members of the family closely associated with the care or loss of the affected child.
The project offered families the opportunity to mix and share their experiences of the disease in an informal setting and that includes the child affected, their siblings, parents and grandparents. This will lead to relationships being fostered and ultimately peer support within these groups, and will additionally reduce families’ feelings of isolation. Of course, it was a particuarly beneficial day for the siblings of the child affected as they see other children and their families in a similar position.
Anne Currie from the Meningitis Trust said “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who plays the People’s Postcode Lottery because they have enabled the Meningitis Trust to bring together families from across Scotland who have been affected by this merciless disease. As a charity we rely heavily on voluntary funding and the People’s Postcode Trust has allowed us to hold a very successful family day to the benefit of the families we support. Thank you for your life-enhancing and valuable support.
Playing the People’s Postcode Lottery is a really easy way to help make a significant difference to the lives of so many people, and without the public’s generosity many valuable services provided by the charity sector would not be available to help improve the lives of others.
