Maggie’s Night Hike Grows Wings

Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, the cancer charity established in Edinburgh, now operates permanent and interim centres across the UK. It therefore stands to reason that Maggie’s much heralded events might take foot and grow wings also.

The popularity of the London Night Hike, a 20 mile walk across the city which takes in stunning architecture and Open Doors venues, has convinced event organisers that this sponsored walk with a difference will attract many supporters north of the border. With expectant participant numbers sitting at a mighty 700,   September will see the streets of Glasgow lined with ‘Glasgow Night Hikers’, all of whom will be granted special access to buildings normally closed to the public, including Kibble Palace, the Cloisters at Glasgow University .

Walking 10 miles, individuals or teams wishing to take part can find out more here, with the event taking place on September 17th.  The London Night Hike, also taking place on the 17th, will encompass both a 10 mile and 20 mile route for the bravest among supporters.

It costs £350,000 to run a Maggie’s centre for a year and £1.9 million to build a new centre. Last year night hikers raised a staggering £689,000, enabling Maggie’s to run one centres for nearly 2 years.

Participants from People’s Postcode Lottery joined hundreds of other night hikers in London last year, with a spokesperson from the group saying “The event was so well organised, with the many stops along the way a great way to keep spirits high! The architecture and buildings we were able to gain access to- from the Channel 4 building to London’s Maggie’s Centre- were spectacular and made for a superb 20 miles. To top it off, we were treated to bacon rolls and massages at the finish line- a perfect end to a very special night.”

People’s Postcode Lottery players have raised over £1.3 million for Maggie’s Centres across England and Scotland. Find out more here.
