Monster Bike and Hike Calls for Volunteers

Described as “leg hammering, heart pounding and breath catching”, the Monster Bike and Hike 2010 is a huge adventure challenge with places having already filled up fast. The 24 hour team fundraising challenge is in its seventh year and every year raises fantastic amounts for the brilliant cancer charity Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

But don’t despair if you’re not the sporty type, as you can still do your bit by volunteering and helping people affected by cancer.

By volunteering you’ll be supporting teams of colleagues, friends and families taking part in the Monster fundraising event. 1,000 hikers and bikers will be strapping on their boots to cycle 30 miles and then hike up to 43 further miles in just 24 hours to raise funds to support the people we all know to be affected by cancer. Over 3,000 people have taken part since the event began in 2004 and have raised over £3,000,000 for Maggie’s!

And there’s no shortage of tasks for volunteers and marshals alike- check out the roles listed below, which are in addition to specialist support from masseurs, people with bike maintenance/repair skills, medical professionals/physiotherapists, owners of 4-wheel drive vehicles & people with access to other resources such as trailers or large tents.
Maggie’s need volunteers and marshals for the following tasks -

• Direct & register people on Friday (Fort William)
• Help caterers with the Pasta Party on Friday (Fort William)
• Distribute bikes to participants on Saturday (Fort William)
• Man the water stops & main checkpoints – check people in & out, give out refreshments & encouragement! (Fort         William to Inverness – inc Fort Augustus, Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit)
• Marshal people at road junctions, directing them on route
• Direct people to car parks, give directions to portaloos etc
• Picking up litter along the route
• Helping at the finish line in Inverness (at the Inverness Aquadome) – giving out medals, prizes, tidying up
You can help for as little or as long as you are able – Maggie’s will need people from the morning of Friday April 30th through Sunday May 2nd.   Volunteers are needed all along the route including locations in Fort William, Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Drumnadrochit and Inverness.

Maggie’s Centres provide information & support to anyone affected by any type of cancer. There are currently six Centres open in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverness, London & Fife.  A further five Centres are due to open before 2012.
